The Max Planck Institutes for Informatics (Saarbruecken), Software Systems (Saarbruecken and Kaiserslautern), and Security and Privacy (Bochum) offer research internships in all areas of Computer Science.
These internships give you a chance to work on world-class research projects right from the start. They are also an excellent way for students and recent graduates to explore or begin a career in academic research for the first time. Who Can Apply?
Internships are open to:
- Exceptional Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral students worldwide
- Exceptional individuals from industry who want to gain academic research experience in computer science
You can also apply if you are looking for a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis project. The project can sometimes be converted into your university thesis, depending on your university’s rules.
Internships are especially suitable for pre-doctoral students who want to try research before starting a PhD. We welcome applications from students with interdisciplinary interests (for example, Computer Science combined with social science, economics or law), provided the main focus stays on Computer Science applications.
We particularly encourage applications from individuals belonging to underrepresented groups in Computer Science.

Key Requirements:
To be eligible you should:
- Have a solid background in Computer Science (roughly the first three years of a standard Bachelor’s program)
- Show strong academic performance
- Be interested in doing real research in computer science
Knowledge of German is not required all institutes use English as the working language. Professional English fluency is essential.

Internships usually last 12 to 14 weeks, but longer stays are possible. Most internships start during the summer months (May to August), though positions outside summer are also available.

Deadlines:
Summer internships (starting between May and August) Deadline: 1 November of the previous year You will receive a reply by 1 February. If you do not hear back by this date, your application was not successful.
Internships starting at any other time (January–April or September–December) No fixed deadline. Apply at least 5 months before your planned start date. If you do not hear back within 4 months of applying, your application was not selected.
