Available Projects:

1. Modulating Microstructure of Vascular Grafts for Enhanced Artery Regeneration

Small-diameter vascular graft failure remains a major clinical challenge due to thrombosis, chronic inflammation, and poor long-term tissue integration. This project aims to engineer next-generation biomaterial-based vascular grafts with tunable microstructural and biomechanical properties that actively guide host immune responses and promote functional artery regeneration.

The student will investigate how scaffold architecture and mechanical cues influence macrophage behaviour, vascular cell recruitment, extracellular matrix remodelling, and tissue regeneration. Advanced biomaterials fabrication techniques and multi-scale characterization methods will be integrated with in vitro and preclinical models to establish design principles for regenerative vascular grafts.

This project provides strong interdisciplinary training spanning biomaterials science, tissue engineering, vascular biology, immunology, and translational regenerative medicine. Students will work collaboratively with engineers, clinicians, and biomedical researchers within a highly interdisciplinary research environment.

2. Reprogramming Macrophages for Improved Tissue Repair

Macrophages are central regulators of inflammation, tissue repair, and regeneration. However, dysregulated macrophage responses contribute to chronic inflammation and impaired healing in cardiovascular disease, chronic wounds, and ageing-related disorders. This project aims to develop biomaterial-based and immunometabolic engineering strategies to reprogram macrophage behaviour toward pro-regenerative phenotypes.

The student will investigate how biomaterials, extracellular matrix-derived cues, and immunometabolic signals regulate macrophage phenotype and tissue repair functions. The project will integrate advanced cell culture systems, biomaterial delivery platforms, transcriptomic analyses, and translational disease models to better understand and therapeutically modulate immune responses for regenerative medicine applications.

This highly interdisciplinary project combines immunology, biomaterials engineering, regenerative medicine, and translational biology. Students will work closely with engineers, clinicians, and biomedical researchers in a collaborative and supportive research environment.
