Applications are now open for the Jean Monnet Fellowships 2027/28, offered by the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. This one year residential fellowship is for experienced researchers whose work fits the Centre’s research themes, such as European politics, law, economics, governance and related social science areas.
It is a funded fellowship, not a full scholarship: fellows receive a monthly grant of €2,850, plus extra allowances for travel, research and family members. What this Fellowship offer:
Monthly Grant
- Basic grant of €2,850 per month
- If you receive other grants or salaries, you must tell the EUI. Your grant may be lowered, but not below €2,100 per month
- The EUI does not tax the fellowship, but you must follow any tax rules that apply to you
Family Allowances
- Up to €310 per month if your partner lives with you in Florence and earns less than €2,000 per month
- €210 per month for each dependent child living with you in Florence
- Children over 18 in full time education need a school or university certificate
- No allowance is paid for children over 26
- You must provide documents such as a marriage certificate, proof of living together, or birth certificates
Other Support
- €650 for costs such as conferences
- Reimbursement for your trip to Florence and your trip home, up to €1,200 in total (fellow only, not family). First class rail or economy flights. Taxis are not covered
- The EUI helps non EU fellows and their families. Visa costs are reimbursed up to €250 with receipts

Eligibility Criteria:
- You must hold a PhD awarded before 1 September 2022
- Candidates of all nationalities can apply
- You can be a postdoc, a tenure track academic, or a scholar on sabbatical
- Your research proposal must fit one of the Centre’s research themes, programmes or projects
- You must be able to live in the Florence area for the full fellowship
- You need two academic referees (current EUI professors cannot be referees)
- You need adequate medical insurance during your stay

Things to Keep in Mind:
- You must live in the Florence area during the fellowship
- You need adequate medical insurance, either your own or the EUI’s private scheme at your own cost
- No removal or installation expenses are provided
- If you arrive late or leave before 20 July, your grant is reduced, and nothing is paid for August
- Your research should lead to a publication, such as an EUI Working Paper, a journal article or a book

Selection Process:
- Candidates are selected by the Academic Staff of the Robert Schuman Centre
- The EUI Executive Committee must approve each nomination
- The decision is final and cannot be appealed
- Unsuccessful candidates do not receive individual feedback
- A reserve list may be used if selected candidates decline
Special Note for Polish Candidates:
The Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education funds one Jean Monnet Fellowship for 2027/28. It is for Polish candidates whose doctorate is more than five years old. No separate application is needed. Apply through the normal process and you will be considered automatically.
