EPFL E3 Summer Research Internship 2027 in Switzerland

Applications will open soon for the EPFL E3 Summer Research Internship 2027 in Switzerland, a funded research program for international Bachelor and Master students. It is offered by the School of Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), one of the top technical universities in the world. Students from any field of engineering and technology can apply, and selected interns spend 8 to 12 weeks working in a real research lab.

The program provides a monthly allowance of 1800 or 2500 CHF plus travel cost refunds, so it is considered fully funded, although you must arrange your own accommodation. The application deadline is November 1, 2026. You can check out BS, MS, PhD and postdoc positions here.

What This Scholarship Offers:

You receive 1800 CHF per month if your host lab is in Lausanne, Sion or Fribourg, or 2500 CHF per month if it is in Geneva or Neuchâtel.
You can request a refund for a second class train ticket and a low cost economy flight, subject to approval by your host lab.
If your home university recognizes the internship and the host professor agrees, you can earn ECTS credits, and the internship can last longer than 3 months.
If you are accepted, EPFL sends detailed instructions and helps with the visa process. Any embassy fees are paid by you.
You must find your own housing, but your host lab staff usually suggest student forums, residences and other resources.
You become part of your host lab and campus community for the whole summer.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, you must meet all of these conditions:

You are enrolled in a Bachelor or Master program at the time of application.
You stay enrolled for the entire internship period.
You have completed at least your first two years of Bachelor studies in any field of engineering and technology.
You come from a university other than EPFL.

Who Cannot Apply?

PhD students are not eligible. They can contact EPFL researchers or labs directly to arrange an internship on their own.
Students in the second year of a Bachelor who will only finish that year before summer are not eligible.
EPFL students are not eligible. They can join the separate “Summer in the Lab” program.
Students from the partner universities below are not eligible for E3. They can apply to the EPFL Excellence Research Internship Program instead.

If you finish your Master before the summer, you can still apply as long as you are a student at the time of application. However, you must remain a student for the entire internship.

How Are Students Selected:

E3 is highly competitive. Host labs review the applications and may invite selected candidates to an online interview. The selection criteria are:

You are among the top 10% of your class with a high GPA.
You plan to pursue PhD studies. Previous laboratory experience is a plus.
Your application convinces the committee of your excellence and passion for science.
Your statement of purpose shows your ambition and career goals, and explains your choice of host laboratories.

More than 100 laboratories at the School of Engineering have committed to hosting E3 interns. To improve your chances, pick up to three labs that fit your interests and explain your choice in your statement of purpose.

There is no list of predefined projects, so you cannot choose a project before applying. Labs propose projects directly to selected candidates, and you can discuss them to find a good match.

Documents Required:

CV: Any layout, maximum 5 MB.
Complete transcripts: Covering your whole academic career so far. If they are not in English, upload the originals and a translation (it does not need to be official).
Statement of purpose: Also called a research statement or motivation letter. Aim for a maximum of two pages.
Passport scan: Upload a national ID scan if you do not have a passport.
Optional: Recommendation letters and English certificates such as IELTS or TOEFL. Leaving them out will not hurt your application.

Important Dates:

October 2026: Application portal opens.
November 1, 2026: Application deadline. Late applications are not accepted for any reason.
After the deadline until early March 2027: Online interviews with host labs.
Around two months after the deadline: Successful candidates may receive an internship offer.
Mid March 2027: Applicants without an offer receive an email that the selection process is closed.

Enter your GPA exactly as written on your transcripts, without converting it to another scale.
