Google PhD Fellowship Program 2026

Applications are now open for the Google PhD Fellowship Program 2026. This is a highly respected scholarship offered by Google to support talented and hardworking PhD students around the world. The program helps outstanding students who are doing innovative and important research in computer science and related fields.

Google created this fellowship because they want to build strong connections with universities and support the next generation of technology leaders. Selected students receive funding that covers tuition, living costs, travel, and research expenses. In some places, students can get support for up to 4 years. There is no application fee to apply. Africa

  • Up to 3 years
  • US $15,000 to cover stipend, research activities, and travel (including overseas)

Australia and New Zealand

  • 1 year
  • AUD $20,000 to cover stipend, research activities, and travel (including overseas)

Canada and the United States

  • Up to 2 years
  • US $85,000 per year (effective 2025 for new recipients) – covers tuition, fees, living expenses, travel, and personal equipment

East Asia

  • 1 year
  • US $10,000 to cover stipend, research activities, and travel (including overseas)

Europe and the Middle East

  • Up to 2 years
  • Yearly bursary that varies by country (covers stipend/salary, health care, social benefits, tuition, conference travel, and computing equipment)

India

  • Early-stage PhD students: Up to 4 years – US $50,000
  • Late-stage PhD students: 1 year – US $10,000

Latin America

  • Up to 2 years
  • US $15,000 per year for stipend, research activities, and travel

Southeast Asia

  • Up to 3 years (or until graduation, whichever comes first)
  • US $10,000 per year for stipend, research activities, and travel

Eligibility Requirements:

General Eligibility (All Regions)

  • Must remain enrolled full-time in a PhD program during the entire fellowship period
  • Google employees and their immediate family members are not eligible
  • Students already receiving a comparable industry award are not eligible (government or non-profit funding is allowed)
  • Previous Google PhD Fellowship recipients cannot apply again

University Eligibility

Your university must be an accredited research institution that awards PhD degrees in computer science or related fields.

Region-Specific Student Eligibility

  • Africa, India, Latin America, Southeast Asia: Incoming or early-stage PhD students are eligible (award is conditional on enrolling full-time in an eligible PhD program)
  • Australia & New Zealand: Early-stage (1st or 2nd year) PhD students
  • Canada & United States: Students who have completed graduate coursework by the start of the fellowship
  • East Asia: Students who have completed most graduate coursework and have enough time left for research
  • Europe & Middle East: Students at any stage of their PhD are eligible

  • Research/Dissertation Proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)

  • 2–3 letters of recommendation (at least one from thesis advisor)

Australia and New Zealand

Canada, East Asia, and the United States

  • Cover sheet signed by Department Chair
  • 1-page CV of primary advisor

  • Two student essays (350 words each)

India & Southeast Asia

  • 1-page CV of primary PhD advisor
  • Transcripts from Bachelor’s degree onwards

Latin America

  • 1-page CV of primary advisor
  • Transcripts from Bachelor’s degree onwards
  • Research proposal (max 3 pages)
  • 2–3 letters of recommendation

Important Additional Information:

  • Nomination Limit per University:
    • Canada & United States: Up to 4 students
    • Most other regions: Up to 3 students
    • Latin America: Any number of eligible students
  • Awards are paid directly to the university (no overhead allowed).
  • Fellowship recipients do not become Google employees.
  • There are no intellectual property restrictions unless you do an internship at Google.
  • You can still apply for other Google scholarships while holding this fellowship.

How to Apply:

Important: Students cannot apply directly to Google. You must be nominated by your university.

  1. Contact your department office or graduate school at your university.
  2. Ask about the internal nomination process for the Google PhD Fellowship.
  3. If your university chooses to nominate you, they will submit the application for you.
  4. Prepare all required documents such as your CV, research proposal, recommendation letters, and transcripts.
  5. Make sure all documents are in English.
  6. Submit everything before the deadline: April 30, 2026.
