Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (Doctoral Scholarship Opportunities)

Applications are now open for the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s doctoral scholarships, supporting both German and international doctoral candidates pursuing research in any discipline except medical fields. The scholarships, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) or the Federal Foreign Office (AA), are open to students admitted to a doctoral program at a state or state-recognized university in Germany, an EU country (except the UK), or Switzerland, as well as foreign students conducting research in Germany.

The application deadline is October 1, 2025. These fully funded scholarships provide a monthly stipend of up to €1,450, a research or mobility allowance, and additional benefits like health insurance contributions or funding for research stays abroad. Who Can Apply?

  • German doctoral students admitted to a doctoral program at a state or state-recognized university in Germany, an EU country (except the UK), or Switzerland.
  • Foreign doctoral students admitted to a doctoral program at a state or state-recognized university in Germany.
  • Students planning a research stay abroad during their doctorate.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Outstanding academic degree.
  • Demonstrated social commitment aligned with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s values (e.g., involvement in anti-fascist, anti-racist, feminist, environmental, or other social initiatives).
  • No double funding from other public scholarships or unemployment benefits.

Who Can Apply?

  • Foreign doctoral students pursuing their doctorate at a German university or conducting a research stay in Germany as part of a doctoral program at a foreign university.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Admission to a state or state-recognized university in Germany or abroad.
  • Supervision by a university lecturer in Germany.
  • Outstanding academic performance.
  • Social commitment in line with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s mission.
  • German language proficiency (B2 level or higher).
  • Not residing in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application (exceptions for prior studies or research preparation).
  • No double funding from other public scholarships.

Funding Details

  • Duration:
    • Doctoral studies at a German university: Up to 3 years (with a possible 6-month extension).
    • Research stay in Germany: Up to 3 years, depending on the research duration.
  • Monthly Stipend: €1,400 + €100 mobility allowance + €20 flat-rate benefit.
  • Note: Private stays abroad (e.g., in your home country) are not funded. Prior funding from other institutions will be deducted from the 3-year period. Completion scholarships are not available.
