Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the TMU Scholarship 2026, you must meet the following requirements:

Academic Requirements

  • Master’s Applicants: Must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program or have equivalent academic qualifications (recognized by TMU). Must be at least 22 years old at enrollment.
  • Ph.D. Applicants: Must be enrolled in a master’s degree program or have equivalent academic qualifications (recognized by TMU). Must be at least 24 years old at enrollment.
  • GPA Requirement: A minimum GPA of 2.30 from your current or most recent academic institution. You must maintain this GPA during the scholarship period.

Applicants must be affiliated with:

  • A TMU partner institution (check the list of partner universities).
  • A higher education institution, research institution, governmental organization, or company located in:
    • Tokyo’s Sister and Friendship Cities/States (e.g., New York City, Beijing, Seoul, Jakarta, London, etc.).
    • Any Asian country/region (e.g., Pakistan, India, China, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.).
  • Alternatively, applicants enrolled in a master’s program in Japan with a “Student” visa status are eligible.

Language Proficiency

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Japanese:
    • Passed JLPT N2 or higher, or
    • Completed an educational program in Japanese, or
    • Demonstrated equivalent Japanese proficiency (as judged by TMU).
  • English:
    • B2 level or higher on the CEFR scale (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent), or
    • Completed an educational program in English, or
    • Demonstrated equivalent English proficiency (as judged by TMU).
  • Basic Japanese Commitment: Willingness to learn basic Japanese (up to daily conversation level) by program completion.
