Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, writers, translators, and other humanists with exceptional talent. Here’s who can apply:

  • Artists and writers with significant promise, often having published a first book or equivalent achievements in their field.
  • No U.S. citizenship required.
  • No age limit.
  • Not available for those pursuing an MFA, Ph.D., or other advanced degrees.
  • Previous Princeton Arts Fellowship recipients or those with a sustained relationship with Princeton are ineligible.
  • Applicants with occasional or sporadic Princeton connections may apply.

Application Requirements

To apply for the Hodder Fellowship, submit the following through the online portal:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): A detailed resume showcasing your background and achievements.
  2. Project Proposal: A 500-word description of your proposed artistic project and plans for the 10-month fellowship.
  3. Work Samples: Submit samples of your work with a 150-word statement explaining how they relate to your proposal. Specific requirements by discipline:
    • Creative Writing:
      • Prose: Up to 3,000 words.
      • Poetry: Up to 20 pages.
      • If submitting both: Up to 2,000 words (prose) and 10 pages (poetry).
    • Dance (Choreography): 1–3 links to continuous footage (at least 15 minutes total) of rehearsals, research, or performances. Include cue points; avoid trailers or promotional materials.
    • Music: 1–2 scores and/or links to performance examples (10 minutes total). Video is optional.
    • Theater: Up to 15 pages of writing and/or up to 10 design images (photos or renderings) and/or video/audio reel with cue points.
    • Visual Arts: Up to 20 still images, or up to 10 minutes of video, or a combination of 10 images and 5 minutes of video. Provide cue points for longer video works.
  4. Recommenders: The application requires contact information for three recommenders, though they are unlikely to be contacted.
