Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

Applications are now open for the Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme, a prestigious opportunity for postdoctoral researchers to advance their careers in Ireland. This programme, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and managed by Research Ireland, supports one- or two-year fellowships at eligible Irish higher education institutions.

It is open to all disciplines, from archaeology to zoology, and encourages innovative, interdisciplinary research. Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have authored or co-authored at least one published peer-reviewed research publication (e.g., a journal article in an international journal or a peer-reviewed conference proceedings paper that is published or accepted for publication). Articles in preparation or submitted are not acceptable.
  • Demonstrate equivalent intellectual property output, such as other publications or research outputs.

Note: Academic mentors can only support one applicant per application cycle. Applications with mentors endorsing multiple candidates will be deemed ineligible.

How to Apply

  1. Online Submission: All applications must be submitted through the programme’s online system by the applicant deadline (October 23, 2025, 16:00 Irish local time).
    • Register and submit early to avoid server issues due to high traffic. It’s recommended to submit at least eight hours before the deadline.
    • No hard copies or email submissions are accepted.
    • Additional materials beyond the application form will render the application ineligible.
  2. Academic Mentor Requirement:
    • Secure an academic mentor to guide your research project. Discuss your project with them well in advance.
    • The mentor must submit an endorsement form by the mentor deadline (November 6, 2025, 16:00 Irish local time).
    • Mentors can only endorse one applicant. Failure to submit the endorsement form or endorsing multiple applicants will result in ineligibility.
    • Research Ireland does not assist in finding mentors; this is the applicant’s responsibility.
  3. Research Office Endorsement: The research office of the host institution must endorse the application by November 13, 2025, 16:00 (Irish local time). Applications with multiple endorsements from the same mentor will be deemed ineligible.
