Overview

The International Max Planck Research School for Molecules of Life (IMPRS-ML) is a world-class PhD program for aspiring researchers in life sciences. Based in Munich, Germany, this program is a successor to the successful IMPRS-LS (est. 2005) and focuses on interdisciplinary research in biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics, cell biology, systems biology, and computational biology. Operated by the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB), it collaborates with the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence (MPI-BI), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), and Technische Universität München (TUM), two of Germany’s top universities.

Research Areas

IMPRS-ML is dedicated to advancing knowledge in life sciences through three core areas:

  • Molecular Mechanisms: Exploring the structure, function, and dynamics of biomolecules.
  • Biological Systems: Investigating how molecules interact within biological systems to respond to environmental cues.
  • Computational Biology and Technology Development: Leveraging advanced computational methods and technologies for groundbreaking discoveries.

Over 30 internationally recognized group leaders offer challenging, interdisciplinary PhD projects to push the boundaries of science.

Eligibility

To apply, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Requirements:
    • The usual entry level is a Master of Science (MSc) or equivalent. Most applicants hold a BSc + MSc (300 ECTS) or a 5-year integrated MSc. Applicants from relevant fields such as Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics are welcome.
    • EU applicants: A 4-year first-class BSc Hons (240 ECTS) under the Bologna system is eligible.
    • UK/Australia/Canada applicants: A 4-year first-class BSc Hons or MSci (240 ECTS) is eligible.
    • Non-Bologna countries (incl. USA, Asia, Africa, Turkey): A 4-year BSc alone is not sufficient; a Master’s is required.
  • Grade Requirements: A minimum average grade of 1–2.5 (German system, 1 = highest, 5 = lowest). Use the Grade Conversion Tool for non-German degrees.
  • English Proficiency: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Accepted tests include:
    • TOEFL iBT: Minimum 80 overall (20 per section).
    • IELTS: Minimum 6.5 overall (6.5 per section).
    • CEFR (Cambridge ESOL): Upper B2 (175–179) or higher.
