Applications are now open for the HDR Scholarship, including the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship, funded by the Australian Government, and the Deakin University Postgraduate Research (DUPR) Scholarship, funded by Deakin University. These prestigious awards are available to both domestic and international students pursuing Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) at Deakin University. Only top-ranked applicants will secure an RTP scholarship. Checkout MS and PhD positions.

Ensure you submit your full application by the following deadlines:

  • 2026 International Round (February 2026 Intake): Closes 24 August 2025
  • 2026 Domestic Round (February 2026 Intake): Closes 24 October 2025

Benefits

The RTP and DUPR scholarships offer:

  • Stipend: $35,550 per annum (tax-exempt, 2025 rate)
  • Relocation Allowance: $500–$1,500 (depending on family status) for students relocating from interstate or overseas
  • International Students: Single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the student visa
  • Duration:
    • Doctoral Degree: 3 years for stipend, 4 years for tuition fees offset
    • Research Master’s Degree: 2 years for both stipend and tuition fees offset

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for an RTP or DUPR scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a domestic or international student enrolled in an HDR course at Deakin University
  • Not receive an equivalent Commonwealth scholarship for HDR fees
  • For RTP/DUPRS Stipend: Not receive income exceeding 75% of the stipend rate ($35,550) for general living costs during the course
    • Income unrelated to the course or not for living costs is exempt
  • Have completed at least four years of tertiary education with an 80% or equivalent in the research component, or equivalent academic achievement (considering work experience, publications, or other research experience)
  • Meet all other entry requirements outlined in the HDR Admission, Selection, and Enrolment Procedure. Check the Research Degree Entry Pathways for more details

Current HDR students: Eligible to apply if they have not completed more than 3 years of a doctoral course or 2 years of a master’s course (or part-time equivalent).

Deakin University supports HDR programs across its faculties and institutes, covering a wide range of disciplines, such as:

  • Arts and Education: Social sciences, humanities, education, creative arts
  • Business and Law: Business, management, economics, law
  • Health: Medicine, nursing, psychology, public health, nutrition
  • Science, Engineering, and Built Environment: Engineering, environmental sciences, information technology, architecture
  • Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM): Materials science, nanotechnology
  • Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI): Artificial intelligence, robotics, data science
  • Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute: AI and machine learning
  • Other Interdisciplinary Areas: Sustainability, biotechnology, social policy, and more

Selection Process

RTP and DUPR stipends are awarded through a competitive process based on the 2025 Ranking Guidelines. Key requirements include:

  • Academic excellence (80% or equivalent in research components)
  • Relevant work experience, publications, or research experience
  • Enrollment as an on-campus, full-time student
