The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald invites applications for the 2026/27 Alfried Krupp Fellowships, offering up to 6 Senior Fellowships and up to 8 Junior Fellowships for the academic year 2026/27.

The 2026/27 academic year focuses on interdisciplinary research into the Baltic Sea region, covering topics from culture to ecology. However, applications from all disciplines are welcome and will be evaluated based on quality and alignment with the University of Greifswald’s research priorities. You can more fellowships here.

Who Can Apply?

Senior Fellowships

  • Eligibility: Outstanding academic researchers with a proven track record in research and teaching.
  • Requirements: Applicants should demonstrate how their project aligns with and strengthens the University of Greifswald’s research priorities.

Junior Fellowships

  • Eligibility: Highly qualified young researchers with a completed doctorate at the time of application.
  • Requirements: Similar to Senior Fellowships, the project should contribute to Greifswald’s academic community.

Note: Affiliation with an academic institution is not required at the time of application or during the fellowship. Group applications for interdisciplinary projects are also accepted, with each member submitting a separate application referencing the group project.

Fellowship Details

Number of Fellowships

  • Total: 14 (3–6 Senior Fellowships and 4–8 Junior Fellowships).

Duration

  • Options: 6 months (one semester: October 1–March 31 or April 1–September 30) or 12 months (full academic year: October 1–September 30).
  • Flexibility: Applicants can state a preference for the winter or summer semester for 6-month fellowships. Postponement is only possible between semesters within the same academic year.

Scholarship Value

  • Funding: Fellowships are tailored to the academic achievements of applicants.
  • Accommodation: Free living and working space at the Kolleg.
  • Family Support: The Kolleg supports fellows accompanied by partners and/or children.
  • Exclusions: Travel, laboratory costs, and additional insurance benefits are not covered.

Co-Financing

  • Senior Fellowships: Applicants are encouraged to combine a research semester at their home institution with a 6-month fellowship at the Kolleg. Information on potential contributions from the home institution should be included.
  • Junior Fellowships: Applicants are expected to be on leave from their home institution. Contributions from the home institution are welcomed but not mandatory.

Research Expectations

  • Project Focus: Fellows must pursue a major research project, ideally completing it during their stay.
  • Residency: Fellows are expected to live at the Kolleg and make it their primary base.
  • Collaboration: Fellows should establish collaborations with University of Greifswald researchers.
  • Teaching: Offering a course for University of Greifswald students is encouraged.
  • Research Alignment: Projects should strengthen the University’s research priorities and contribute to Greifswald’s academic community.

How to Apply

  • Submission: Applications must be submitted electronically via the online application form.
  • Languages: Applications can be submitted in English or German.

  • Letter of Motivation: Maximum 1 page (PDF).
  • Abstract: Maximum 0.5 page (PDF).
  • Project Synopsis: Maximum 5 pages, excluding footnotes and bibliography (PDF).

Anonymization

  • Process: The application process is anonymized to ensure fairness. Personal data (e.g., name, age, gender, contact details) must not appear in the letter of motivation, abstract, or synopsis.
  • Guidelines: Use gender-neutral wording and avoid references to sensitive information (e.g., marital status, military service, or language skills). Use “author” instead of your name when referencing your publications.
  • File Format: All documents must be submitted as PDFs.

Selection Process

  • First Round: Anonymized review to ensure unbiased evaluation.
  • Second Round: The Scientific Director reviews applications and submits recommendations to the Scientific Advisory Board for final selection.
  • Notification: Applicants will be informed of decisions in March, April, or May 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an existing project?

Yes, you must have a sufficiently developed research project. Include an abstract (0.5 page) and a synopsis (up to 5 pages) with your application.

Do I need to be nominated?

No, nominations are not required. However, letters of recommendation can be included.
