DAAD/AGI Research Fellowship Program 2026

Applications are now invited for the DAAD/AGI Research Fellowship Program 2026, an excellent opportunity for scholars to conduct research in Washington, DC, for up to six months. This program, funded by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), focuses on transatlantic relations, covering fields like Foreign and Security Policy, Society, Culture & Politics, and Geoeconomics. It is a funded fellowship offering a monthly stipend, travel support, and office space at the American-German Institute (AGI).

Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to:

  • German nationals who are doctoral candidates or hold a PhD and are active at an academic institution, think tank, or public policy/research organization.
  • Non-German nationals who are permanently living in Germany, are doctoral candidates or PhD holders, and are affiliated with an academic institution, think tank, or public policy/research organization.
  • Doctoral candidates and PhD researchers at current or former DAAD Centers for German and European Studies (U.S. citizens are eligible only if affiliated with DAAD Centers outside the U.S.).
  • Applicants must be proficient in English and have completed or be working on a PhD.
  • Individuals who received DAAD support within three years of the fellowship start date are ineligible (except those affiliated with DAAD Centers).

Expectations

During the fellowship, participants will:

  • Present research at a workshop for the Washington, DC, policy community.
  • Publish a short analytical essay on the AGI website and in The AGI Advisor newsletter.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, such as seminars or lectures at universities or research institutions (AGI will assist with organization).

Application Process

Submit the following in English as a single PDF to [email protected] by September 5, 2025:

  1. Cover Letter: State citizenship/eligibility and how you learned about the fellowship.
  2. Curriculum Vitae: Include publications if applicable.
  3. Project Proposal (5–7 pages, double-spaced):
    • Research focus and relevance to AGI’s mission.
    • Why AGI and Washington, DC, are ideal.
    • Fellowship duration (2–6 months) and preferred dates.
    • Key organizations/individuals in Washington, DC, for research.
    • Plans for visiting a DAAD center in North America.
  4. Letters of Reference:
    • Two recent letters required for PhD students and recent PhDs (within 5 years).
    • Optional for senior researchers.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, with interviews conducted in person or via video conference.
