The CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship is a prestigious opportunity for young scientists passionate about advancing research in fundamental immunology or cancer immunology. Program Overview

The fellowship supports hypothesis-driven, mechanistic studies in immunology and tumor immunology, aiming to deepen our understanding of the immune system’s role in cancer. CRI is committed to nurturing early-career scientists and has recently pledged an additional $2.5 million to fund 10 more fellowships over the next year to address disruptions in federal funding.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Research Focus: Projects must be in immunology or cancer immunology, with relevance to solving cancer-related problems.
  • Educational Background: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree by the award activation date.
  • Research Environment: Research must be conducted under a sponsor with a formal appointment as an assistant professor or higher at a non-profit institution.
  • Experience: Applicants with more than 5 years of relevant postdoctoral experience (excluding M.D. residency years) are ineligible. Exceptions may be made for those with 3+ years in a sponsor’s lab under special circumstances.
  • Sponsor Limits: Only one fellow per sponsor may apply per application round, and sponsors may not support more than three CRI fellows at a time.
  • Location: Research can be conducted in the U.S. or abroad at a non-profit institution, with no citizenship restrictions.
  • Resubmissions: Applicants may resubmit improved applications in subsequent rounds, addressing changes and progress.

Application Deadlines

  • Deadlines: September 1, 2025
  • Notification: Decisions are communicated within 10-12 weeks of the deadline.
  • Award Activation: Fellowships can start 4 months after the deadline but no later than 1 year after. Awards begin on the first of the month.

  1. Applicant Background: A 500-word description of your background and research accomplishments.
  2. Training Goals: A 250-word description of the knowledge and skillsets you aim to gain during the fellowship, addressing gaps in your training and how the opportunity will enhance your expertise.
  3. Funding Sources: List other funding applications, including due dates.
  4. Curriculum Vitae: Submit your CV and bibliography (NIH biosketch preferred) as a PDF.
  5. Project Summary: A 500-word summary of your project, highlighting its relevance to the immune system’s role in cancer or cancer treatment.
  6. Abstract: A 250-word non-technical abstract in plain English, explaining the project’s importance and clinical relevance for CRI’s lay Board of Trustees.
  7. Specific Aims: A 500-word outline of your project’s specific aims.
  8. Research Proposal: A concise proposal (up to 4 pages, including tables/figures, excluding references) covering background, significance, materials, and methods, submitted as a PDF.
  9. Sponsor’s Letter: A letter from your sponsor introducing you, describing their qualifications, confirming direct supervision, and verifying that the application and preliminary data (if any) were primarily your work. Submitted as a PDF.
  10. Sponsor’s CV: Sponsor’s CV or NIH biosketch, including current research support (bibliography limited to the past 5 years if using a formal CV), submitted as a PDF.
  11. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters, one from your thesis advisor (or a qualified individual for M.D. applicants) and one from someone familiar with your work (not the sponsor). If the sponsor was your thesis advisor, contact CRI for guidance. Letters should be submitted as PDFs, preferably via the online application, or emailed to [email protected] with your name and application ID.

  • File Format: All attachments must be PDFs, typed single-spaced in 12-point font or larger.
