Call for Applications: Three NOMIS Fellowships at University of Basel, Switzerland


The eikones – Center for the Theory and History of the Image at the University of Basel is offering three one-year NOMIS Fellowships starting September 1, 2026. These fully-funded fellowships are open to outstanding junior and senior researchers from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences whose work explores images as models or paradigms in scientific and aesthetic contexts.

Since 2005, eikones has been a hub for interdisciplinary research on images, studying their roles as tools for knowledge and cultural practices across history and in modern society. The NOMIS Fellowships support innovative research projects that examine how images visualize complex structures, serve as exemplary models, or contribute to epistemic and learning processes.

Fellowship Details

  • Duration: One year, starting September 1, 2026

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a doctoral degree
  • Have published either:
    • A monograph (e.g., your dissertation), OR
    • Three articles in journals or collected volumes
  • Conduct research related to images as models
  • Applications are welcome from all academic fields and can be submitted in English or German

  4. Copy of Doctoral Diploma
  5. Project Description (2–3 pages, plus references)
