APART-USA Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers 2025

Program Overview

The APART-USA program offers 25 fellowships to exceptional postdoctoral researchers.

  • Funding Amount: €500,000 per fellowship
    • 75% (€375,000) funded by the Fonds Zukunft Österreich (FZÖ)
    • 25% (€125,000) funded by the nominating host institution
  • Duration: 48 months, with a possible extension of up to 3 months in exceptional cases

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the APART-USA fellowship, candidates must:

  • Hold a doctorate degree
  • Be affiliated with a U.S. university or non-university research institution at the time of nomination or have been affiliated until at least January 1, 2025
  • Be nominated by an eligible Austrian host research institution
  • Be of any nationality

Eligible Austrian research institutions are selected based on their third-party funding performance (2020–2024), including grants from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the European Research Council (ERC). The following institutions can nominate candidates:

Nomination and Selection Process

  • Nomination: Candidates are nominated by eligible Austrian research institutions, which assess and select candidates based on their qualifications.
  • Grant Approval: The Austrian Academy of Sciences reviews nominations and approves those meeting the criteria, ensuring a swift process for fellows to begin research in Austria.
  • Reserve Nominations: If fewer than 25 eligible nominations are received by the deadline, remaining fellowships are awarded via a lottery from reserve nominations.
