PhD Program at Medical University of Graz, Austria

The Medical University of Graz is offering fully funded PhD positions in Molecular Medicine, one of Austria’s leading programs for medical research. Successful applicants will work on projects in cancer research, immunology, medical genetics, and pulmonary fibrosis, combining basic research with clinical science. The position comes with a three year employment contract, health insurance, and social benefits, along with a monthly gross salary of EUR 2,832.10.

Who Can Apply:

Applicants must hold, or be close to completing, an undergraduate degree equivalent to a Master’s in a natural science, life science, or medical field. The degree must have included a written master’s thesis.

A few important points to know:

  • Students who have not yet finished their Master’s degree may still apply, but they must graduate before actually joining the PhD program.
  • The program is taught in English, so applicants should be highly proficient in the language. A formal English certificate is not required at the application stage, but selected students must provide one before admission.
  • Applicants of all nationalities are welcome. The university’s Welcome Center helps international students with visa applications and residence permits, and candidates are selected without regard to sex, race, or nationality.

Selection Procedure:

The selection process has three stages:

  • Stage one: Written application documents are reviewed.
  • Stage two: Shortlisted applicants take part in an online pre interview.
  • Stage three: Top candidates are invited to an in person hearing at the Medical University of Graz, held from December 15 to 17, 2026.

Timeline to keep in mind:

  • Invitations for the online pre interviews will be sent during calendar weeks 39 and 40.
  • Invitations for the in person hearing will be sent during calendar week 41.

Travel costs for the in person hearing are reimbursed up to a set limit, with details shared in the invitation. Candidates who cannot attend in person can instead speak with faculty members online.
