University of Malta Graduate Scholarships for Non-EU/EEA Students


The University of Malta offers tuition fee waivers ranging from 40% to 100% to attract talented non-EU/EEA students for Master’s by Research and Ph.D. programs. Scholarship Overview

  • Purpose: To support top-quality non-EU/EEA students pursuing Master by Research or Ph.D. programs.
  • Award: Tuition fee waivers of 40% to 100% for the standard duration of the program. Extensions may not be eligible for waivers.
  • Note: Bench fees for certain programs may still apply, and living costs or travel expenses are not covered.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Programs:
    • Master by Research (dissertation/project worth 60 ECTS or more).
    • Ph.D. (full-time or part-time).
  • Ineligible Programs:
    • Professional doctorates.
    • MBA-type programs.
  • Requirements:
    • Applicants must have an unconditional acceptance to a Master by Research or Ph.D. program.
    • Applications from students who have already started their program are not accepted.

How to Apply

Step 1: Secure Admission

  • Apply for a Master by Research or Ph.D. program at the University of Malta and receive an unconditional acceptance letter.
  • Visit the International Office website for admission details.

Step 2: Prepare Application Documents

Submit the following documents via email to the International Office:

  • Email Subject: “University of Malta Postgraduate Scholarship Application” with your UM Applicant ID (student number from the acceptance letter).
  • Required Documents:
    • Copy of the Acceptance Letter.
    • Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV).
    • Motivational letter (highlighting your passion for the research topic and its relevance to your career).
    • Copy of your passport (details page).

Step 3: Academic Recommendation

  • The International Office will request an Academic Recommendation Form from your Head of Department, Supervisor, or Director to assess your research capabilities.

Step 4: Online Interview

  • Eligible candidates will be invited for an online interview with the UM Ph.D. and Masters (by Research) Degree Scholarship Selection Board.
  • The interview evaluates your communication skills, research plan, and suitability.

Application Deadlines

  • 31 January: For programs starting in February or later.
  • 31 May: For programs starting in October.
  • 31 October: For programs starting in February or later.

Award Criteria

The Scholarship Selection Board evaluates applications based on the following, with a total score determining the fee waiver percentage:

  • Academic Ability and Research Proposal Quality (60%):
    • Academic track record, publications, and academic references.
    • Validity, relevance, and quality of the research proposal.
  • Motivational Letter (10%):
    • Clarity, language quality, and connection to your career or research passion.
  • Interview Performance (10%):
    • English communication skills, ability to answer questions, and suitability for the research plan.
  • Personal Circumstances and Financial Need (10%):
    • Consideration of your career stage and ability to fund studies without the scholarship.
  • Contribution to UM and Malta (10%):
    • Potential added value of your research to the University of Malta and Malta.

Fee Waiver Percentages

Based on the interview score:

  • 80–100%: Full Fee Waiver
  • 70–79%: 80% Fee Waiver
  • 60–69%: 60% Fee Waiver
  • 50–59%: 40% Fee Waiver
  • 0–49%: No Fee Waiver

Scholarship Terms and Conditions

  • Coverage: Waives tuition fees only (partial or full, based on the score). Does not cover living costs, travel, or bench fees.
  • Exclusions:
    • Applicants with a full scholarship (covering tuition and living costs) from another organization are ineligible.
    • Partial scholarships or maintenance grants for living costs must be disclosed but may be allowed.
  • Obligations:
    • Engage seriously in your studies.
    • Register monthly progress with your academic supervisor.
    • Complete the program within the standard duration.
  • Decision: The Scholarship Selection Board’s decision is final.
