What is the Helmut Veith Stipend?

The Helmut Veith Stipend is awarded annually to outstanding female students who are motivated to excel in computer science. It honors Helmut Veith (1971–2016), a renowned scientist and advocate for women in technology. The stipend supports students starting or continuing one of TU Wien’s English-taught master’s programs in Computer Science during the following semesters:

• Winter semester 2025/2026
• Summer semester 2026
• Winter semester 2026/2027

Benefits of the Stipend

Recipients of the Helmut Veith Stipend receive:

• Financial Support: €7,000 per year for up to two years.
• Tuition Fee Waiver: Full waiver of tuition fees at TU Wien.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Helmut Veith Stipend, you must meet the following requirements:

1. Gender: Open to female students only (male students are not eligible).
2. Program Admission: Must be eligible for admission to one of TU Wien’s English-taught master’s programs in Computer Science, including:
   • Master in Logic and Computation
   • Master in Business Informatics
   • Master in Computer Engineering (Technische Informatik)
   • Master in Data Science
   • Master in Media and Human-Centered Computing
   • Master in Software Engineering and Internet Computing
3. Academic Background: A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or an equivalent field.
4. Research Interest: Strong knowledge or interest in at least one of Helmut Veith’s research areas:
   • Logic in Computer Science
   • Formal Methods and Verification
   • Foundations of Artificial Intelligence
   • Algorithms and Complexity Theory
   • Computer Security
5. English Proficiency: Proven proficiency in English (e.g., TOEFL certificate or confirmation of English-taught bachelor’s studies).
6. Admission Status: Funding is awarded only to students unconditionally admitted to a TU Wien master’s program. Applications for funding can be submitted before or during the admission process, but funding depends on full admission.

Conditions for Recipients

If awarded the stipend, you must:

• Academic Progress: Earn at least 25 ECTS credits per term (on average) and maintain a grade average of 1.5 or better (based on the Austrian grading system).
• Residency: Reside in Austria during term time, with exceptions (e.g., internships or research visits) requiring approval.
• Duration: The stipend is provided for up to two years, subject to meeting the above conditions.

Application Process

To apply for the Helmut Veith Stipend, submit the following documents via the TU Wien job portal:

1. Cover Letter: Explain the funding you’re applying for and any relevant details.
2. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Highlight your academic and professional background.
3. Motivation Letter: Describe why you want to study in your chosen program, why you need funding, and which TU Wien faculty groups you’d like to work with for your master’s thesis.
