12- Doctoral Student in Journalism, Media and Communication
The University of Gothenburg offers one or more fully-funded PhD positions in Journalism, Media and Communication at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG), a leading research environment in Sweden. Starting January 1, 2026 (or by agreement), this 4-year program focuses on producing a scholarly thesis in areas like journalism, crisis communication, media audiences, digital culture, or political communication. The position includes a salary and opportunities to engage with an international research community.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct independent research to produce a doctoral thesis that advances knowledge in journalism, media, or communication.
- Develop a research project aligned with JMG’s focus areas, such as journalism in transition, crisis communication, or digital media.
- Complete doctoral-level coursework and participate in seminars and international conferences.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
- Optionally, take on teaching or administrative tasks (up to 20% of your time, extending the program duration).
Eligibility Requirements
- A master’s degree in Journalism, Media and Communication Studies, or a related field with a thesis focused on these areas, or equivalent, with at least 60 credits at the master’s level in relevant subjects.
- Sufficient proficiency in English to engage with academic literature, coursework, and international conferences.
- Knowledge of Swedish is advantageous, as it’s the official working language, though research communication is in English.
