13- PhD Student Position in Engineering Science

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research institution with a multilingual and interdisciplinary focus, offers a PhD position in Engineering Science within the Department of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM). This position, part of the Interreg NWE-funded PreWaPharm project and supervised by Prof. Dr. Joachim Hansen, focuses on reducing pharmaceutical residues in hospital wastewater to mitigate environmental impact.

Your Role

Operate and assess a pilot project at healthcare institutions (hospitals in Luxembourg and Belgium) to reduce medicine residue emissions.
Evaluate and optimize a combination of Advanced Oxidation Processes and Nature-based Solutions for wastewater treatment, comparing them with other technologies.
Develop innovative treatment trains to remove pharmaceutical residues from hospital wastewater.
Explore possibilities for water reuse within healthcare institutions and their surroundings.
Contribute to teaching and supervising Bachelor/Master projects within the department.
Participate in the PreWaPharm project’s transnational strategy to address pharmaceutical pollution in water.

Requirements

Diploma or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
Advanced competence in laboratory and analytical work.
Curiosity, passion for scientific research, and openness to interdisciplinary collaboration.
Commitment to critical thinking and strong research ethics.
Fluent written and verbal English skills (German is desirable).
